BRISBANE supergroup Powderfinger have today announced they will be disbanding after their next tour which kicks off in September.

The group, which includes former Nambour High student Jon Coghill as its drummer, said in a statement read out by lead singer Bernard Fanning that they have said all they want to say as a musical group.

“The Sunsets tour will be Powderfinger's last ever run of shows,” Fanning said.

“We have decided, after much deliberation and agonising, that after this final tour we will call it a day as a recording and touring band.

“With the completion of our last album, Golden Rule, we feel that we have said all that we want to say as a musical group.

“We firmly believe that it is our most complete and satisfying album and can't think of a better way to farewell our fans than with music that we all believe in and also with, hopefully, our best tour to date”

In their two decade career Powderfinger have sold more than 2.5million albums, won 16 ARIA awards including an unprecedented three successive ARIA awards for Album of the Year.

They have achieved six number one debut albums and their latest album Golden Rule debuted in the number 1 spot when it was released in November.

The Sunsets farewell tour will kick off in Newcastle on September 1 and make its way to the Sunshine Coast with a performance at the Caloundra Music Festival on October 8.

Tickets for Sunsets - The Farewell Tour go on sale at 9am on Friday April 30.
