DRIVERS heading from Brisbane into Ipswich along the motorway were greeted by an out-of-sorts sign yesterday.

The recently installed “City of Ipswich” sign over the Ipswich/Logan Motorway interchange had three letters lifted out of place on Tuesday night.

Motorists who were left scratching their heads after passing the sign will be glad to know the jumbled Ipswich was not due to vandals.

Main Roads work crews had raised the letters, and will do more tonight, so they can move the lights under the sign.

A spokesperson for the department said the sign would be better lit at night after all the lights were put into the new alignment. They said should all go to plan, the newly realigned lights will be ready and the sign back to normal today.

“It didn’t come from complaints from the public or anything like that – the workers just thought it would reduce light glare for drivers and better light up the sign,” they said.

“The letters were moved so the lights will be shining up more on the sign. It’s only a small job.”

Ipswich City Council contributed $31,000 to the sign, which Mayor Paul Pisasale said was a fraction of the cost compared to how much Main Roads contributed.

The sign was erected in late November and was first lit-up about Christmas time last year.
