Big spend on promoting pedal power

THE State Government’s commitment to promoting safe cycling across Ipswich and Queensland has reached a record $100 million spend for the year 2009/10 alone.

Premier Anna Bligh said the government was serious about promoting cycling as a fun, healthy alternative transport option for Queenslanders.

Transport Minister and Member for Ipswich Rachel Nolan joined Premier Bligh and more than 1000 cyclists on the annual Ride to Work in Brisbane yesterday.

Bike Week started on March 13 and finishes this Sunday.

“Cycling can play a key role in the fight against congestion. Around 83 per cent of all trips today are by car,” Ms Bligh said.

“Yet half of all car trips cover a distance of less than five kilometres.”

If the average person changed just five trips a week to cycling, the number of trips taken by car would fall from 83 per cent to 66 per cent.

Ms Nolan said the government was actively promoting cycling and other sustainable forms of transport through its TravelSmart program, which works to reduce congestion by encouraging public transport, cycling, walking and car-pooling.

“Bike Week provides opportunities for everyone to participate in organised bicycle events in a safe and supported environment,” Ms Nolan said.

“More people each year are discovering that Bike Week events are a great way to experience the benefits of cycling.” For details go to visit www.bq.org.au.
