Former Jets roar for Tigers

SOME former Ipswich Jets players made a welcome return to North Ipswich Reserve, helping their new team Easts Tigers win 24-14 in the round 1 FOGS Cup match.

Past Jets players Scott Ireland and Dan Fullerton scored tries in the Easts’ win which was always assured despite some gritty Jets’ defence.

Jets’ hooker Nathan Carney was impressive for the home side while big winger Rodney Mauga also showed promise.

Ireland played in the Jets’ grand final loss in 2008 before a knee injury ruined his 2009 season.

But the blonde winger looks to have refound his form after he made some scintillating breaks.

The Jets Colts side also lost to the Tigers 40-30.

Colts coach Mark Bishop rued a host of silly errors.

“We kicked the ball out on the full and did not play smart at times,” Bishop said.

“But I was rapt with the effort.

“We were held up over the line four times and things generally didn’t fall our way.”

Jets’ fullback Eric Alefosio was the home side’s best.

FOGS Cup: Easts Tigers 24 (S Ireland, D Fullarton, B Williams, J Helu, D Rigby tries; S Ireland 2 goals) d Ipswich Jets 14 (R Mauga, J Levu, G Shield tries; N Carney goal).

FOGS Colts: Easts Tigers 40 (T Hook 2, C Jones 2, M Ruthenberg, M Dudley, D Wallace tries; B Harper 6 goals) d Ipswich Jets 30 (E Alefosio, C Naidu, Gordon Fonua, J Furminger, T Jeans, A Christensen tries; E Alefosio 3 goals).
