St George

RECENT tsunami warnings keep water and flood damage top of mind on Queensland’s coast, while unpredictable storms and floods again threaten the interior.
THE Queensland community of St George has been spared the absolute worst - with the local river set to peak lower than expected - but it and much of the south-west is still inundated by floodwater.
The community had been preparing for the Balonne River to reach 14 metres on last night, which would have caused the inundation of 80 per cent of the town.
The level was later downgraded to 13.5m - still the highest level since recordings began in 1890.
"I wouldn't say it is a significant difference,'' a spokesman for the Department of Community Safety said.
"It's better than what was expected but it's not good by any means, the town's still inundated.''
