Automatic flood cover advised for QldRECENT tsunami warnings keep water and flood damage top of mind on Queensland’s coast, while unpredictable storms and floods again threaten the interior.

PARTS of Ipswich have enjoyed a month’s rainfall in the first two days of March, with a monsoon low-pressure system delivering as promised on Tuesday.

While parts of western Queensland, Townsville and the Sunshine Coast were hit with flash floods, the rain fell more steadily over Ipswich, resulting in some swollen creeks and gullies but no serious inundation.

Falls of between 35mm and 80mm were recorded across the region in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday morning.

SES group leader Beth Suhr said crews sandbagged homes at Coalfalls and Booval as rising streams threatened to burst their banks.

“We also saw a large, three-level retaining wall collapse at Bellbird Park – narrowly missing the neighbour’s house as it came down,” Mrs Suhr said.

The SES answered six calls for help from residents with leaking roofs.

Wet weather may have contributed to a serious single vehicle accident at Walloon yesterday morning.

A woman lost control of her dual-cab Hilux while coming around a sharp bend on Haigslea-Amberley Road, skidding head-on into a large gum tree about 8am.

Police closed the road in both directions while firefighters cut the woman out of her wrecked vehicle. She sustained chest injuries and was taken to Ipswich Hospital in a stable condition.

Walloon resident John Russell said the section of Haigslea-Amberley road was particularly hazardous in the wet and warned all motorists to be careful.

The rain had a positive effect on the region’s dams, with a combined increase of 2.1 per cent between Friday and yesterday morning.

Somerset and Wivenhoe dams were both full yesterday, with Wivenhoe at 63.8 per cent. Wivenhoe Dam is expected to rise further as rain and inflows continue and water is released from an overflowing Somerset Dam.
