IT was not the start Ipswich’s Cyril Connell (under 16) and Mal Meninga (under 18) Cup teams had hoped for.
Both sides were upstaged by their Souths Logan opponents in round one of their respective competitions at Brandon Park on Friday night.
Ipswich’s under 18s lost 38-26, despite a brace of tries to Kumar Ashok and four pointers to Rian Diffey, Matt Parcell and Josh Seage.
In the under-16 match, Ipswich lost 30-16 with Sean Ikihele, Matt Brown and Denman Ah-You crossing for the beaten side.
“The only disappointment is in the results,” Rugby League Ipswich manager Paul Lowe said.
“We’re in the process of developing players and that was evident.
“There were good patches of 10-15 minutes here and there.
“As the season progresses we want to get closer to playing a full half, each half.”
Lowe said both Ipswich teams paid the price for high error rates.
“Both teams never gave up but we put ourselves under pressure early with plenty of turnovers,” Lowe said. “That decides these early games.”
Both teams get the chance to make amends when they take on Wynnum Manly at Briggs Road on Saturday night in round two of the competition.
