'Daddy punched me and mummy cried'

A TWO-YEAR-OLD boy who was allegedly punched so hard his bowel ruptured told police “daddy punched me and mummy cried,” a court heard.

In a pre-recorded interview played to a jury in Ipswich District Court on Wednesday, the young boy told plain clothed Senior Constable Trudi Flintham in November 2007 about the alleged attack.

“Daddy punched me in my tummy,” the boy said.

“Mummy cried ... and mummy ran away in her car – in daddy’s car.”

The child’s 29-year-old father, whose name cannot be published, denied a charge of grievous bodily harm and told investigating police his son hurt himself playing with his sister.

The man said that when he asked his five-year-old daughter what had happened, she told them the boy ran into the arm rest of the lounge chair on the night of October 16, 2007.

During cross-examination yesterday, barrister Andrew West asked Snr Const Flintham about the family’s lounge chair.

Mr West asked Snr Const Flintham if there were any covers on the wooden arm rests of the lounge chair and she agreed there weren’t any.

The trial before Judge Deborah Richards continues today.
