Nolan's new skills go missing

IPSWICH MP Rachel Nolan had special media training with a cult Australian comedy actor last week – but yesterday was unable to put her new skills to the test.

Anthony Simcoe – famous for his role as Steve Kerrigan in Aussie comedy The Castle – was hired by the Transport Minister and five other parliamentary colleagues for media training.

But Ms Nolan’s office yesterday refused an interview request from The Queensland Times, instead issuing a written statement.

The day-long session with Mr Simcoe and former political adviser Greg Turnbull was held in parliament last Friday.

Paid for out of the MPs’ own pockets, the training included lessons on body language and public speaking.

While Ms Nolan won’t be telling the LNP or journalists they are dreamin’ anytime soon, in a statement she said The Castle actor was well-known for his media training.

“It’s not unusual for anyone in public life, from politicians to firemen, to undergo media training,” Ms Nolan’s statement said.

“Even professional footballers take part so they can provide comment after games.”

After first being elected as Member for Ipswich in 2001, Ms Nolan has endured more media scrutiny than ever recently since becoming the Transport Minister in March last year.

Ms Nolan has been extensively grilled over the introduction of the Go Card, and the State Government’s controversial plan to sell state assets, which includes parts of Queensland Rail.

Premier Anna Bligh said the training was a normal part of politician’s roles as public figures, and applauded the ministers for improving their skills.

“Being a minister is a serious responsibility and communicating is a very important part of it,” she said.

Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek said he looked forward to “some Academy award winning performances” from the participating ministers but admitted he had benefited from similar training.
