WHILE many women wouldn’t leave home without it, it seems when it comes to make-up, less is more.
A recent survey found men thought women wore too much make-up and preferred girls who adopted a more natural look.
Beauty on Belle salon trainer Sharyn Hafner said one of the most common mistakes women made when it came to make up was going too heavy for day-time.
“Less is best. If you go too heavy it emphasises the features that you don’t want to emphasise,” Ms Hafner said.
Ms Hafner said often it was best to seek professional help to get advice on matching eye shadow, blush and lipstick colours. Ella Bache Ipswich manager Tenille Dargusch said another common error was not matching the foundation correctly to the skin.
“A lot of people also apply their foundation too thickly,” she said.
Ms Dargusch said applying concealer before foundation was another no-no.
“By applying the concealer before the base it can make blemishes stick out more,” she said.
The UK study also found men don’t like false eyelashes, bright lipstick, Amy Winehouse-style eyeliner “flicks”, dark lip-liner and pencilled-in eyebrows.
Thick layers of caked-on foundation, a favourite fashion trait of celebs like Jordan and Christina Aguilera, emerged as one of the biggest turn-offs – as did overdoing blusher.
Gloopy mascara and panda eyes caused by leaving make-up on overnight were also hailed as a no-no by the male respondents.
McCannix Nails & Beauty owner Katherine McCann said the beauty salon ran make-up workshops twice a month to teach women correct application and techniques.
“We find the vast majority of people might have never learnt how to put on make-up, their skin has had allergic reactions and they have stayed away from make-up or they might have been applying make-up for 25 years in the same way,” Ms McCann said.
