A 19-YEAR-OLD man was killed yesterday when he was hit by an out of control car as he walked across a street in Brassall.

The man had all but crossed Hunter Street just before lunch time to buy a drink from the 7-Eleven at the service station across from his home.

Senior Sergeant John McCrae said the man had reached the bike lane about a metre from the footpath when he was hit by a speeding car.

“He was struck from behind by a vehicle travelling on the wrong side of the road at high speed near the intersection of Hunter and Loynes streets,” Snr Sgt McCrae said.

“Witnesses said would have been propelled six or seven metres into the air.

“We believe the driver had a medical situation. He didn’t know what he had done.”

He said the driver was two weeks short of his 50th birthday. The 19-year-old died at the scene.

After hitting the 19-year-old, the man’s white sedan climbed the footpath in front of Brassall Veterinary Clinic between the intersection and the service station.

The car scraped the trunk of a small tree on the edge of the road and took out half the clinic’s steel mesh fence.

The impact tore off the car’s passenger side front wheel, which was left lying on the footpath. Broken glass showered 20m up the service station exit.

The car then took a left turn across the road leaving particles of glass and debris in its wake before it ended up on the opposite footpath about 50m away next to a large power pole carrying a transformer.

Soon after, a woman ran towards the scene from the nearby McDonald’s crying hysterically and repeating, “Sean’s dead.”

Friends of the 19-year-old were inconsolable as they stood nearby, emotionally hugging and talking tearfully on mobile phones.

Loud crying was heard coming from the man’s home.

A man who said he was driving past when the 19-year-old was hit was too distraught to talk about it.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like that,” he said, his hand trembling as he fumbled for a cigarette.

A police Forensic Crash Unit member started investigating straight away, directing that no vehicles pass over the scene.

Hunter Street from the intersection with Haig Street to the Mihi Street intersection was barricaded for the afternoon.

Police said anyone with information about the crash should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au.
