IPSWICH residents stood up and spoke out against domestic violence for White Ribbon Day yesterday.
Throughout the community – and in The Queensland Times office – men and women wore white ribbons to support the fight against domestic violence.
QT general manager Steve Portas said it was important Ipswich men took on the message of White Ribbon Day and took an oath to never use violence against women. “I see it as more than a one day event – it’s something we as men can take on board every day of our lives,” he said.
Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said any man who felt the urge to hit a woman should seek help. “It not only affects the victim but any children in the house and it tears families apart,” he said.
Statistics show 1000 women are violently assaulted across Australia every day, equating to nearly half a million women in any one year. White Ribbon Day is the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
