Council workers attend to a hole which developed on Toongarra Road at Leichhardt near Kynance Street yesterday.
IN A nasty case of deja vu for Ipswich City council workers, a hole has appeared in a central Ipswich road.
Ipswich Council City Works committee chairman Trevor Nardi said a hole measuring about one metre deep and three metres square had been reported about 1pm on Toongarra Road at Leichhardt.
Cr Nardi said it was believed erosion of soil in the vicinity of a storm water pipe had caused the hole.
Chas Clist lives just metres from the giant pothole and said given Ipswich’s track record, with a giant hole appearing in the CBD in March and the Collingwood Park subsidence debacle, it was a worry.
“If it is due to water pipes, it should be fine,” Mr Clist said.
“If it is because of a mine, it will be a worry given Ipswich’s history.”
Coral Sharpe was equally concerned.
“I would like somebody to tell me if it will affect the nearby houses,” she said.
“My house might not be much but it is all I have got.”
Traffic was diverted around the trouble spot via Kynance Street as Ipswich council personnel carried out repairs.
Work was expected to continue overnight. Cr Nardi said during repairs a water main had been broken, with water supply to about 20 homes affected.
