Accused played in victim’s blood: court

AN IPSWICH man whose throat was slit watched as his alleged attacker covered herself in his blood, a court was told.

Paul Hicks, 48, yesterday gave evidence that he invited the accused Liam Gaynor, 45, and American woman Lois Ann Perryman, 41, to his Collingwood Park home for Sunday lunch before he was attacked.

Ipswich Magistrates Court was told Mr Hicks had just put a pork roast back in the oven when he felt a hand on his shoulder and a sharp slice across his neck.

Mr Hicks said he grabbed his throat and turned to see Perryman standing behind him.

“The blood was starting to come out uncontrollably – it was just spurting everywhere,” he told the court.

“She was covered in my blood.”

Mr Hicks said Perryman slid herself to the ground while his blood sprayed over her.

“She was swirling her hands around in my blood,” he said.

He told the court that she then asked him: “Who’s the big man now, Paul?”

Mr Hicks said he staggered to the bathroom, grabbed a towel to slow the bleeding and went back to the kitchen to call an ambulance but passed out.

The court is hearing evidence against Gaynor and Perryman to determine whether they will face trial on charges of attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm and entering a dwelling.

Perryman met Bellbird Park man Gaynor on the internet and she came to Australia so they could marry. Mr Hicks had invited the pair to his house on September 28 last year for lunch to thank Gaynor for cleaning his pool and tending his garden.

The victim’s 19-year-old son Anthony told the court he arrived at the scene to find his father passed out in a pool of blood.

Anthony said Perryman returned to the kitchen from outside and rolled in the blood before grabbing him and saying: “He’s going to be okay.”

He said the 41-year-old told him Gaynor “didn’t do it”.

The court has previously been told that police searched Gaynor’s house after his arrest, finding blood in his car and a knife in the kitchen sink.

The committal hearing will continue on February 10.
