Teens bash man in his front yard

A FATHER of three was attacked in the front yard of his home after confronting a group of teens on a rampage through the streets of Leichhardt.

Tow truck driver Trevor Davis, 36, suffered a large cut beneath his left eye and some facial bruising after being hit blindside with either a fist or an unknown weapon.

A group of about six young men had been roaming Coleman Street and Toongarra Road late Monday night, damaging property and hurling verbal abuse towards anyone they came across.

At least two of them were believed to have gone after Mr Davis, before damaging the windscreen of his tow truck and part of his front fence.

Recovering at home yesterday, Mr Davis said he had been on the phone to a friend when he heard loud banging outside his Coleman Street house, about 10.45 Monday night.

“Two of my bins had been tipped over and some fence palings were missing,” Mr Davis said.

“I looked up the road and saw a group of youths - so I yelled out to them to come back and clean up the rubbish.”

They refused, however one of the group came back and started dancing around Mr Davis “like a boxer”.

Some of the other members started to make their way back toward Mr Davis' house, and by this point he claimed rocks were being thrown in his direction.

“I got myself into a really bad situation,” he said.

“One of the other males came down toward me quickly and, when I turned to see what he was doing, I got hit from the side. I don't know what I was hit with - I'm a big lad and it takes a lot to knock me down - but it knocked me down.”

Mr Davis dodged a few more punches before staggering back into his house and dialling Triple-0.

While he was doing that, one of the young men started punching into his tow truck, cracking the windscreen and pushing back a rear vision mirror.

The group then continued up Coleman Street, damaging at least one more fence and abusing residents.

A woman from Coleman Street said she was verbally abused after telling the group to leave her neighbour's front yard.

“They were pulling a whole panel of palings off the fence next door and throwing them around,” she said.

“Some of them were hanging around my neighbour's car across the road - I'm not sure what they were up to.”

Police attended after receiving multiple Triple-0 calls over the assault and subsequent property damage.

The arrival of three police cars caused the mob to scatter.

Meanwhile, Mr Davis was taken to Ipswich Hospital, where doctors glued his wound shut.

He was sent home about 1.30am yesterday.

“I don't know why these kids do this sort of thing,” Mr Davis said.

“It was a horrifying experience but the fear that they would come into my house and harm my wife and kids was what got me back onto my feet and back upstairs.”

Mr Davis was continuing to assist police with their inquiries into the incident.

A 17-year-old man was yesterday charged with entering a premises with intent to commit an offence and police said additional charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and wilful damage were likely.

Police are also hoping to speak with two juveniles in relation to assault and wilful damage.
