'Roundabout will kill again'

RACEVIEW residents are urging Ipswich City Council to do something about a roundabout, the scene of a fatal crash on Saturday, before another person is killed.

RESIDENTS in Raceview are urging Ipswich City Council to do something about a roundabout, the scene of a fatal crash on Saturday, before another person is killed.

A resident who witnessed Saturday's horrific crash, who did not want to be named, said it was only a matter of time before another person was killed at the intersection.

The resident, who lives near the intersection on South Station Road and Robertson Road, said every week for the past seven years there had been a near-miss at the site.

“It's a really bad intersection. Accidents happen here all the time, at least once a week,” he said.

“Just about every weekend a sign is taken out by a driver who speeds through the intersection or misjudges a turn.”

One motorist had even ploughed through his fence and into his garden, the resident said.

“Other times you just hear them screeching around the corner, without slowing down, and then the next thing you know they are up on the footpath because they were driving too fast,” he said.

The resident, who echoed the views of his neighbours, said they had asked council to install guard rails to protect pedestrians walking on the pathways near the roundabout and also children playing in their yards.

“Council just said no,” he said.

“All we want is for them to fix the intersection so it's safer for everyone involved.”

Ipswich City Council City Works Committee chairman Trevor Nardi said he was unaware of any calls made to council about safety issues at the roundabout.

“There have been calls from time to time about the roughness of the road surface caused by soil movement. However, the area in question would have had no bearing on the accident,” Cr Nardi said.
