Fashion gees up at races

FROM mullet wigs to race day chic - the whole fashion spectrum was covered at the 25th Esk Picnic Races at the weekend.

Esk Jockey Club spokeswoman Margaret Moffatt said the two fashions on the field events had been well attended with a group entry called The Sleeping Babes taking out the novelty section.

“There were four or five ladies all done up in their pyjamas - it was quite a sight,” Mrs Moffatt said.

But the fashion-lovers were out in force with lots of girls braving the icy winds in strapless numbers while one gent make a dashing sight in top hat and tails.

“I would say he was really spiffingly dressed,” she said.

All proceeds from the ticket sales went towards making miracles happen for sick children at the Mater Children's Hospital and Mrs Moffatt said race-lovers had flooded in to support the day.

“We had a really pleasant crowd of about 1500,” Mrs Moffatt said.

And among all the excitement was a fine day of racing too.

“You could say it was a punters day because an outsider won the last race and a few people seemed to know about it,” she said.

A Mater Little Miracles spokeswoman said donations would provide vital assistance to health care and medical research.
