IT DON'T matter if they're black or white, Ipswich residents like Michelle Lawrie have been snapping up Michael Jackson albums in their droves since the King of Pop's untimely death last Friday.

The mother of two said her daughters sent her down to JB Hi-Fi at the Riverlink shopping centre yesterday to buy whatever “Wacko Jacko” albums she could.

“Well they've always been fans of his, and now we just thought we'd get a few of his CDs like everybody else,” Mrs Lawrie said.

“You would expect there to be a big rush, because he appealed to a lot of people.

“I think he was a great artist.”

Ipswich JB Hi-Fi music co-ordinator Brad Markey said Jackson's albums had been moonwalking off the shelves in a spectacular fashion.

“The CDs we had in on Friday sold out by lunchtime,” Mr Markey said.

“Over the weekend we had nothing - our head office in Melbourne sought everything that Sony had and we only just received them yesterday.

“I think it's because he was so popular - you would be hard pressed to find someone who wasn't a fan in one way or the other.”

Mr Markey said he expected the rush on the CDs to kick on for another month.

With an increasing number of people buying music digitally over the internet, Mr Markey said he believed the world would never see a popular music phenomenon like Michael Jackson again.

“I don't think anyone will appeal to a wide variety of audiences like Michael did,” he said.
