A QUEENSLAND Police Service request to install a communications base station on the Woodlands Road water tower has led to an angry tirade against the State Government's plans to sell off assets.
During Wednesday's Lockyer Valley council meeting Mayor Steve Jones said while council could not object to the installation of the base station, it would probably receive no payment from the government for assisting the police.
“On the other hand, the government is planning to sell off two police properties in William Street, Gatton,” he said.
“It is a major concern that the government is planning to sell land in the middle of town. We must fight for what's best for our community.”
Cr Jones said the sale of government assets would have “huge ramifications”, and council needed to take a proactive stance against the practice.
Cr Graham Moon described Queensland, until recently, as the goose that was laying the golden eggs.
“Where has the money gone? One minute we're the richest state in the country, the next they're coming in to our town looking for properties to sell,” he said. “We need to take heed of what's happening around us.”
Councillors agreed to ask the Local Government Authority to create a forum at which the issue can be further discussed.
