Childcare worker hurt as intruder flees scene

By Anna Caldwell POLICE rushed to a Springfield childcare centre yesterday morning following reports an intruder was wielding a knife.

The initial reports later could not be confirmed, but an employee of the centre received cuts to her face as the intruder pushed past her.

A police media spokeswoman said the intruder was only seen to be carrying "a silver object", but it was not confirmed to be a knife.

Police were called to the Woodcrest Early Education Centre and Pre-school about 6.20am.

A police spokeswoman said a female employee disturbed a man in one of the complex's sheds, before he pushed past her and fled on foot.

"It was not known what he was doing in the shed," the spokeswoman said.

Police said yesterday investigations into the incident were continuing.

A centre spokeswoman declined to comment.

The man was described as being of caucasian appearance, about 174cm tall, clean shaven and with brown hair.

He was wearing a blue top and blue, baggy jeans.

To assist police, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
