RSPCA veterinary staff have spent the past two weeks nursing a young possum back to health after she was cruelly shot with an arrow and left to die of major injuries.

The possum - now named Marmalade - is now likely to make it back to the wild, but lost her baby in the attack when the arrow pierced through her front leg, pouch and back leg.

RSPCA wildlife veterinarian Tania Bishop said it was probably Marmalade's first baby.

Dr Bishop has made a plea for any information on who may have attacked the possums.

She is also calling on parents and children not to see bow and arrows as toys.

The RSPCA has seen increasing numbers of animals like Marmalade that have been shot with arrows in the past year, with some concern it may have been influenced by the film and book series Hunger Games, which features a skilled archer as the main character.

Dr Bishop said using a bow and arrow on an animal was incredibly cruel because it very rarely killed straight away.

"We've seen just too many horrific things," she said.

"They have to realise the consequences."

Marmalade's injuries included a collapsed lung, open fracture to her arm, an infection in her injured leg and other infections around the site of the fracture.

She is still on heavy antibiotics and painkillers, but Dr Bishop said the team was confident she would live.

"She has a will to live despite everything," she said.

Marmalade was discovered in Walloon Rd, Rosewood, and taken to the hospital on August 9.

Dr Bishop said the condition of her wounds showed the possum had most likely been shot more than a day before she was found.

Anyone with potential information on the attack has been urged to phone the RSPCA on 13 ANIMAL.
