UPDATE: THE mother is reported to be free from the house.

She has been reunited with her other children outside the house by police.

A WOMAN is reported being held hostage in a family home in Redbank Plains.

Police are attending a siege on Kanangra Street where a man armed with a knife is reportedly holding the woman prisoner.

Police have deployed a number of Special Emergency Response Teams (SERT) to the siege.

More than 10 heavily armed SERT officers are on the scene as well as a number of armoured vehicles.

Ipswich Police Inspector Dave Preston said the situation was very serious.

"Things have got a little worse than we anticipated," he said.

A police negotiator is at the scene and the area has been cordoned off with Kanangra St has been closed to Balook St.

No children are believed to be in the house.

The woman is reported to be the 18-year-old man's mother.

Police have had to move on a number of residents who have been trying to watch events unfold.

Some have even taken to climbing onto roofs for a better vantage point.

According to a police spokesman at the scene said negotiation with the man are continuing.

Police have declared an emergent situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act.
