MARK Winterbottom has rounded off a good year in the V8 Supercar Championship by taking out the prestigious Barry Sheene Medal.

The Ford driver, who finished third in the championshop behind Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, accepted the award at a gala dinner in Sydney on Monday night.

It was his first V8 Supercars best and fairest, as voted by the media.

In a close contest Winterbottom finished on 18 votes with three-time recipient Lowndes on 16, tied with emerging star David Reynolds.

"It's a great honour, it does somewhat make up for the year that was," Winterbottom said.
