BEING good friends, communicating freely and enjoying each other's company are the key to 50 years of marriage for Ipswich couple Des and Joy Whybird.

The pair celebrated their milestone with 80 family and friends at Riverview at the weekend.

After meeting at a church youth camp in Tallebudgera, the blissful pair had four children and have common interests in church, music, travel, reading and catering.

Mrs Whybird said the key to happiness was to communicate. "Don't assume how the other person knows how you feel - ask them, and simply be friends," Mrs Whybird said.

Des was a pharmacist and Joy worked at St Andrew's Hospital Ipswich, and together had their children, Catherine, Helen, Anita and Roderick.
