Homemade weapon, hydroponic tent found

IT'S a weapon more likely to be found on the set of Game of Thrones or The Lord of the Rings than a suburban Ipswich home.

Police found a homemade flail, a hard ball connected to a handle with a chain, along with a hydroponic drug set-up inside the Bundamba house of Dianne Elizabeth Syntagerrs.

Police were called to the house on the morning of April 25 on an unrelated matter.

They entered the house and found a hydroponic tent set up in the front bedroom of the house.

The tent contained five plants, which were small but beginning to sprout leaves, and a hydroponic set up including lights and a homemade ventilation system.

Outside the tent, but in clear sight, police saw the flail on top of a cupboard.

The flail was described as a plastic handle with a chain melted into it and a hard ball, similar to a cricket ball, melted onto the chain at the other end.

Syntagerrs pleaded guilty at the Ipswich Magistrates Court to unlawfully possessing a weapon, producing marijuana, possessing goods for the production of marijuana, and possessing drug utensils.

Syntagerrs, a mother of a two-year-old child, told police her partner had made the flail for protection while he was at school.

Defence lawyer Stuart Wills said the drug growing set up as well as the flail had been constructed by Syntagerrs' partner, who had been fined $1000 for the offence.

Mr Wills described the flail as "crudely made" and said the drugs were for the personal use of Syntagerrs and her partner.

The court heard she took marijuana to "calm her down".

The court heard Syntagerrs had no criminal history.

Magistrate Roger Stark said if she struggled with anxiety Syntagerrs should see a doctor rather than self-medicating with marijuana.

He sentenced Syntagerrs to pay a $750 fine. The items were forfeited to police.
