Ward the Star in Perth win

FORMER Melbourne Victory star Nick Ward reminded the club what it was missing out on, scoring a goal and playing brilliantly in Perth's 2-1 win in a trial in Melbourne.

The Glory was missing a host of top-liners including Shane Smeltz, Liam Miller, Dean Heffernan, Steven McGarry and Bas van den Brink.

Coach Ian Ferguson said while the club's depth had again shone though, Ward showed he would be a valuable acquisition.

"I thought Nick Ward was outstanding. He was everywhere, winning tackles, screening and also complemented Jacob Burns," Ferguson said.

The former Victory midfielder fired home from 25m to give Perth the lead after 10m, before on-loan Japanese striker Ryo Nagai was brought down inside the penalty box on 37 minutes, Billy Mehmet converting to double the advantage.

The Victory pulled a goal back within three minutes when Marcos Flores also scored from a penalty.

It was the final trial for Melbourne which had earlier beaten Adelaide and drawn with Central Coast, while the Glory will play Melbourne Heart tomorrow to wrap up its pre-season campaign.
