Wanderers bank on Shinji staying with club next season

WESTERN Sydney Wanderers boss Lyle Gorman says he is confident Shinji Ono will sign an extension on his one-year deal and stay with the rookie A-League club next season.

He also says the club is in no rush to complete the deal with the Japanese superstar, who has set the competition alight this season.

But if I were Gorman and the Western Sydney club, I would be talking to the marquee player as soon as possible, especially considering the rumours that a number of clubs are sniffing around the Japanese international.

Gorman said this week: "Shinji is an integral part of our squad and we are very pleased that we are now seeing what he can deliver for the team.

"We are in the process of confirming the squad for the 2013-14 season and we have been and will be talking to a number of players at a time that is comfortable for them and for us.

"We have recently announced some signings for next season and we expect to make some more announcements in the near future."

Well Lyle, I would make that announcement sooner rather than later, otherwise Ono could get that offer he can't refuse and the club could lose out on arguably the best player in the competition on current form.

His stock has risen considerably over the season after he went somehwat under the radar during the early stages of the campaign.

But one of the major reasons the Wanderers are now sitting in third spot on the A-League ladder is the form of the midfield maestro.

In the opening few games Ono just went about his business with calmness and surety.

Now he has found his feet in Australia, his talents are beginning to shine and his two goals in the win over Melbourne Victory were something to behold.

If Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo had scored the first of his double, when he juggled the ball twice before volleying past Nathan Coe, it would have made headlines around the world - and his second goal was not a bad effort either, curling an unstoppable effort into the corner from outside the box.

While Alessandro Del Piero and Emile Heskey have had their moments, Ono has consistently been the best of the three and fans of the Wanderers would say he has been an invaluable asset in the club's inaugural season in the A-League.

They would certainly want Gorman and the rest of the Western Sydney board to get Ono to sign that extension.

Australian football fans too would be hoping the same as the Japanese star is a joy to watch and I for one would want to see a lot more of him in the A-League.

Who knows, he might just pass the word on to his Japanese colleagues that this isn't a bad place to play the beautiful game and encourage more of his countrymen to make the move.

If they are anything like Ono, I would certainly go and watch them.
