IT'S REGARDED as one of the most dangerous times to be on the road.

But it seems motorists are still taking risks and driving recklessly this holiday season.

While driving between Rockhampton and Gladstone on Friday, Gladstone truck driver John Coutts captured a frightening near miss on the Bruce Hwy.

As an overtaking lane came to an end, a semi trailer travelling behind Mr Coutts's truck sped up to overtake several vehicles, nearly running a car and caravan off the road and narrowly missing an oncoming car.

Mr Coutts said he could not believe what he was seeing, but said the incident was not an isolated one.

"I see this sort of thing of thing all the time," he said

"People have no patience anymore."

Mr Coutts said the truck driver's behaviour was uncalled for.

"He had plenty warning the overtaking lane was about to end," he said.

After 30 years working as a truckie, Mr Coutts decided to install a camera in his truck.

"I bought the camera for $40 off eBay," he said.

"I was sick of truckies always getting a slogging by the media, so I got a camera to keep a record.

"That way I've got proof of what I've done."

Mr Coutts said he wanted the video to act as a warning.

"Step back and have a long hard look at yourself," he said.

"Slow down, take your time and just think about what you're doing.

"All you'll gain is 10 minutes at the end of the day."

Police investigation incident

A QUEENSLAND Police spokesperson said local police were investigating the incident.

"Whilst we cannot comment specifically about this video, we can say there is a traffic offence for driving across double unbroken lines," a QPS spokesperson said.

"Dangerous driving is always a concern for police, as such we are asking all motorists to be patient these Christmas holidays and not take any unnecessary risks whilst on our roads."

Response to video surprises truckie

WHEN Gladstone truck driver John Coutts captured a dangerous driving incident on the Bruce Highway on Friday, he had no idea of the reaction it would cause.

Since its release on Monday the video, which shows a dangerous overtaking situation, has received thousands of views online so far, and is the most viewed video for 2012 across the APN network.

Mr Coutts said he had been blown away by the response.

"I honestly didn't think it would go the way it has," Mr Coutts said. "It's spiralled out of control."

Mr Coutts said the high number of views were probably because of the stupidity of the truck driver involved.

The video shows a semi-trailer speeding up to overtake several vehicles as an overtaking lane comes to an end, nearly running a car and caravan off the road and narrowly missing an oncoming car.

Mr Coutts said he would like to see the driver reprimanded.

"He needs to be caught and taken off the roads."

  • Rob McIntyre: "I see this happen at least 2 or 3 times each trip to Brisbane. This is COMMON and yet the police do nothing about it. I have been cut off like this at least twice this past year and it is terrifying. I say it again, it is a COMMON event on the Bruce Highway."
  • Sherie Holzheimer: "What an idiot!!"
  • Allan Howells: "Should have a video on the back road to Bundy on Friday afternoons, see this type of activity every 5 minutes."
  • Sherri Bagnall: "My husband & i were travelling behind this truck when this incident happened & saw it first hand 4 ourselves. bloody disgusting piece of driving. we were talking on the 2way 2 the truckie who caught this video & were so glad when he told us he had a camera on board & caught the whole thing."
  • Anata Kolesky: "I hope they take his licence! Idiot!!!"
  • Sean Michell: "This is why people die on our roads, some people just dont care or think, chance taking - it will catch up with this driver one day."
  • Rocksy from Boyne Island: "That is unbelievable! Hope the police catch up with him for a whole page of charges! That sort if attitude is quite common on CQ roads as there are so many aggresive drivers out there trying to save themselves 60 seconds. If they kill themselves who cares? But they usually kill the innocent ones and they walk away. IDIOTS!"
  • Cattypus from Central Queensland Mc: "I drive from Miriam Vale to Gladstone on a weekly basis and I can truthfully tell you this happens all the time. I have been nearly run off the road several times in overtaking lanes."
