V8 DRIVERS will have the chance to take home a trophy even if they don't win the season-long competition, after the announcement of the Endurance Cup.

The Endurance Cup will honour the V8s best long-distance driver.

The cup will be handed to the best-performing driver at the Sandown 500, the Bathurst 1000 and the Gold Coast 600.

The new competition will also see the end of the compulsory international driver rule at the Gold Coast 600 - which has previously included the likes of Will Power and Mika Salo - which forced each team to put an overseas-based co-driver in their car.

Teams will now be free to select a local driver to partner their main driver in all three of the long-distance races, beginning with Sandown on September 13.

"These cars are not easy to drive on a one-off basis," V8 Supercar Commission Chairman Mark Skaife said.

"While the Car of the Future will be more 'driver friendly' it's very difficult to transition into a race mode V8 Supercar with limited preparation.

"This way teams can spend the next eight months choosing and preparing the drivers they believe are best equipped across all three races."
