Two shot dead near Empire State

TWO people are dead and eight people are recovering in hospital after a gunman opened fire on Friday near New York City's Empire State Building.

Police say the shooting was not an act of terrorism, but rather an incident involving a disgruntled worker.

Jeffrey Johnson, 58, a fashion accessories designer, was fired a year ago from Hazan Imports, located near the Empire State Building.

Shortly after 9am (local time) he shot a 41-year-old former Hazan co-worker three times at close range with a .45-calibre handgun.

As police closed in on him on the sidewalk, Johnson turned his gun on them and officers shot back and killed him, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
