Monumental failure to issue timely storm warnings: Tully

COUNCILLOR Paul Tully has criticised the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) after a weekend of wild weather, for what he described as a "monumental failure to issue timely storm warnings".

Cr Tully called on BoM to apologise to Ipswich and Brisbane residents and "launch an inquiry", after a severe warning for a thunderstorm was only issued after the storm hit Ipswich.

A BoM spokeswoman said storms developed in intensity quickly and often moved fast.

The storm was easily observable on the BoM's weather radar, and was clearly intense, Cr Tully said.

"[The] weather bureau radar image showed the highly intense storm centred between Amberley and the Ipswich CBD, moving east towards Brisbane," he said.

Cr Tully said a storm warning was eventually issued for Brisbane, Redland and North Stradbroke Island, but it was too late for Ipswich.

"The Bureau's claim they were caught by surprise is completely inconsistent with their own radar image in the hour before the storm struck Brisbane," Cr Tully said.

"Social media seem to be doing a better job."
