PICKING up his eighth Deadly Award has not made Troy Cassar-Daley complacent.

Speaking to The Daily Examiner yesterday while waiting to pick up his mum, Irene Daley, from the airport in Melbourne, Mr Cassar-Daley said these awards were always fresh for him.

Mr Cassar-Daley won the 2012 Deadly Album of the Year award for his 2011 recording, Home.

"I'm really stoked. It's lovely to win this award and it's recognition for all the work we've put in," he said.

"It's good to know it's recognised as a good record."

Mr Cassar-Daley said the Deadly Award, his second for best album, made him aware of the importance of being a role model for his people.

"Lots of young people see me as a role model, so it's very important the way I conduct myself," he said.

"There were a lot of young kids there last night; they're going to be the next generation.

"They're going to be up there receiving these awards, and not too long in the future."

He also paid tribute to the support he received from his home town of Grafton during his early days.

"That early groundswell of support set me up for where I am today," he said.

The Deadly Awards celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement in music, sport, entertainment and community, were held at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday night.
