Trek turns tragic as boy slips

A FAMILY hiking trek turned tragic yesterday when a 12-year-old boy slipped down an embankment and suffered serious head injuries.

The boy and his family were walking on Mt Sylvia, south west of Gatton in the Lockyer Valley, when he slipped and fell down an embankment on the hike.

An ambulance paramedic was winched down to the boy from the RACQ Careflight helicopter to attend him.

The boy suffered head injuries during the fall with rescuers reporting he had been hit by falling rocks.

He was airlifted to the Brisbane Mater Children's Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
