Tower milestone nears
THE billion-dollar Icon Ipswich has emerged from its CBD construction site and is ready to blossom into the city's greatest urban renewal.
Which shop or facility would you most like to see in the Icon Ipswich complex?
The massive inner-city project will reach new heights this month as the first levels of Tower I appear on the corner of Brisbane and Bell Sts. The milestone comes after 10 months of building works on the Leighton Properties and Ipswich City Properties joint venture project.
Andrew Borger, national head of commercial at Leighton Properties, said construction was progressing well on the nine-storey, A-Grade commercial tower.
"Icon Ipswich reached a major milestone this month with the first office level of Tower I rising from the foundations," Mr Borger said.
"Weather permitting, a new level will be added to the tower every two weeks, which should see Tower I on track for completion by September 2013.
"We are already receiving strong levels of inquiry for the ground floor retail component of the tower and we look forward to announcing further details as the project progresses."
He said apart from raising Ipswich's skyline, the Tower I project would also be raising money next month when the construction team at Hutchinson Builders take part in Movember to raise money for Prostate Cancer research.
Last month, Premier Campbell Newman confirmed his promise of following through on the previous government's commitment to move public servants to the Ipswich office tower.
