Top golfer Tseng targets Australian Open title win

THE world's best women golfers need to watch out.

Yani Tseng's "worst" year is behind her and she's ready to dominate again.

The world No.1 will head off in pursuit of her third women's Australian Open title today at Royal Canberra Golf Club and is looking forward to a good year after a chat with her mother.

Tseng went through the first real rough patch of her stellar career last year.

But six weeks off including a spot of snorkelling in the Philippines and some time at home in Taiwan did the trick.

And so did that talk with mum, who reminded her daughter 2012 had been the the Chinese year of the dragon.

"I was a dragon, so my mum said 'It's okay, your bad year is over. Your good year is coming this year'." Tseng said.

Just how bad Tseng's year was has to be put into perspective.

She did have some disappointing results mid-season, with three missed cuts in four weeks.

She sacked two caddies and admits with hindsight that she was searching for a solution that was not there.

But Tseng still won three tournaments and Australian veteran Karrie Webb, the winner of her eighth Australian Masters on the Gold Coast two weeks ago, said: "Yeah, that was a terrible year she had last year, three wins, $1.5 million. I would have hated to have a year like that."

It now seems Tseng has figured out her problems and learned that she needs to appreciate the game again.

"I have a good team, I have good friends, everybody cares about me," the 24-year-old said.

"They don't care if I'm world No. 1. They hug me and comfort me.

"They just care I'm happy every day because last year I looked at lots of press (commentary) and it drove me crazy.
People are (saying) like 'what's wrong with Yani?' I feel it hurts a lot when I see those things on the news and see what fans are talking about me, saying 'Yani is struggling'."

The field is arguably one of the better assembled in women's golf in Australia in recent years.

The world number one, three, six and eight are lining up along with home chances Webb and Lydia Ko.

Defending champion Jessica Korda is back and Michelle Wie looks to kick-start her 2013 season after a year she would rather forget.
