TOOWOOMBA landscaper Roy Brunner has fused his love of rust and the garden into the creation of ever-popular outdoor artworks.

Word is spreading about his handiwork, but the painstaking process involved in their conception means they do not come cheap.

It is a labour of love, Mr Brunner said, borne out of necessity.

"I started doing it because you just couldn't buy wall plaques for the garden in shops," he said.

"People are always looking for things for outside that will last 100 years, but there just aren't any."

The process involves finding interesting objects to lodge on a polystyrene backboard, which is then plastered over and worked with a special rust paint.

Mr Brunner has created everything from cowboy scenes to lone-duck pieces, selling for as much as $1800 each.

"You never really know what you've got until you see it the next morning," he said.
