Think twice before mailing fresh bamboo or duck eggs

THE Federal Government has reminded travellers and those sending gifts for the Chinese New Year of what cannot be sent through the mail or Customs.

Australians expecting gifts from overseas during the Chinese New Year, and visiting friends and relatives, should be aware some things will not be allowed to enter the country.

Department of Agriculture first assistant secretary for Border Compliance, Tim Chapman, said goods including fresh fruit, plants, meat and animal products and Chinese herbal medicines were a biosecurity risk.

"Declaring items does not automatically mean they will be confiscated, however failing to declare risk items could result in a fine or possible prosecution," he said.

Among the things considered a risk were: chicken, preserved pork sausages and dried beef; fresh bamboo and wooden artefacts; citrus and persimmons, lotus nuts; herbal medicines and products containing duck eggs.
