Tennis fans hope for Tomic's strong return after Hopman Cup

AUSSIE fans will be hoping Bernard Tomic's 7-6 3-6 7-5 opening Hopman Cup win against German veteran Tommy Haas in Perth could be the victory that sparks a turnaround in form for 2013.

After starting 2012 with much promise at the Australian Open, the young Aussie had few highlights, eventually dropping to 52 in the world rankings.

Importantly, the fight that was missing so often during the year returned against Haas who led 6-1 in the first set tiebreaker before Tomic reeled off seven consecutive points to take the set.

While Haas came to the net at every opportunity, Tomic was happy to stay on the baseline where he reeled off 22 forehand winners.

Australia took the tie 3-0 after a tearful Andrea Petkovic was forced to retire with a knee injury after beating Queensland teenager Ashley Barty 6-4 in the first set, and was unable to take the court for the mixed doubles.

Tomic and Barty will face a tougher time in their next match-up against Serbia's Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic on Wednesday.
