'Lucky' Ipswich gets through storm without major damage

UPDATE 5.19PM: A BUREAU of Meteorology spokesperson has described Ipswich as 'lucky' after the region saw less severe weather than its western neighbours.

The storm that lashed south-east Queensland this afternoon has left thousands of homes without power, however thankfully only a few of those are in Ipswich.

Energex says about 2200 properties in Brisbane have lost power, along with 1600 in the Somerset Region and 64 in the Lockyer Valley.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service warned residents to get prepared after Dalby recorded a 90km/h wind gust at 3pm.

A BoM spokesperson said Ipswich recorded wind gusts of 65km/h.

"The storm has passed and Ipswich should see the weather easing," he said.

"Ipswich may see a few showers but the brunt of the storm has passed."

Prepare for damaging winds, warns BoM.

EARLIER: SEVERE thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in Ipswich and Boonah over the next few hours, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned.

The storm has passed through Boonah and is predicted to reach a peak in Ipswich, Beaudesert and Esk by 4:55pm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services are asking residents to get prepared after Dalby recorded a 90km/h wind gust at 3pm.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Dalby, Ipswich, Kingaroy, Stanthorpe, Boonah, Oakey, Yarraman, Chinchilla and Mundubbera.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services also advised that people should move their cars undercover or away from large trees, secure loose outdoor items, seek shelter, avoid using the telephone and beware of fallen trees and powerlines during the storm.
