Sprinter Satin Shoes to face Black Caviar at Flemington

WHEN a horse has a race renamed in her honour it might be tough to beat that horse in said race.

When the horse in question is Black Caviar then most might think it would be almost impossible to beat the superstar who has won 21 out of 21 starts.

That is why trainer Clarry Conners answered "Next question" when asked if about confidence levels when his mare Satin Shoes takes on Black Caviar in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

"If we can run second to Black Caviar and get a Group 1 placing, then that will be ok," Conners said.

But he added: "If you're not in it you can't win it and anything can happen on the day."

While taking on the unbeaten superstar might appear to be mission impossible, Satin Shoes is a classy sprinter in her own right.

She already has a Group One placing on the Flemington straight six course, when she finished behind Sepoy and Foxwedge in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and was placed in several Group 2 events in Sydney last campaign.

Conners said Satin Shoes had done well since arriving in Melbourne and would gallop at Flemington this week, in preparation for Saturday's race over 1000m.

"She's had a couple of jumpouts and won a trial here (Warwick Farm) very very easily last week," he said.

"She's got down to Melbourne without any problems and will work down the straight tomorrow and line up on Saturday."

Craig Williams, who would have partnered Ortensia had trainer Paul Messara elected to race her in Saturday's race, has taken the ride on Satin Shoes.

Conners said Satin Shoes would proceed towards the $1 million Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on March 9 if she raced well this weekend.
