Springborg eyes solarium ban
SOLARIUMS could be banned for being a public safety risk.
Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said their known association with skin cancer and melanomas was a concern.
But he said it was a challenging issue because removing them from the market would require a business reconstruction plan for them.
"I would like to see a situation where we would see no more solariums in Queensland," he said.
"There's an issue for those solariums that are operating because they are, whether we like it or not, legitimate businesses which were legally licensed at the time."
Mr Springborg said he was now looking at the regulations to decide what he could do with additional applications for solariums in Queensland.
He said banning them altogether was an option on the table.
"The state has a responsibility to act on behalf of the people to ensure we protect them from public health risks, whether that be in areas of smoking ... or solariums."
