Sorry, your flight has been cancelled

"SORRY, Your flight has been cancelled" are probably the most annoying words to hear when travelling. My flight to Stuttgart, Germany treated me with those words.

Three days earlier most flights had been cancelled due to the heavy snow storms and coldness. One thing we don't experience with flights in Australia is air was so cold that it can freeze the wings off planes.

All the previously cancelled flights caused a domino effect that led to many more cancellations. The airport didn't have enough planes for the number of flights going out. Many of their planes were still abroad, unable to move due to the weather.

2 hours in the airport, announcements going none stop telling everyone about the either cancelled or delayed flights. The departure and arrival board was flashing words in red and yellow, bringing bad news to the ones staring up at them.

My flight at first was just delayed - 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 50 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes. Nearly time to board my delayed flight I went to go through the security. A flashing red light screamed at me to go to the information desk regarding my ticket. My flight was now cancelled.

They organised me to get to Stuttgart via train. My train ticket was then cancelled after a call from the baggage claim saying they wouldn't be able to return my luggage until after my train departed. This was due to the large amount of people also wanting their bag back due to cancelled flights. Luckily there was space on the next plane to Stuttgart, although it wasn't guaranteed that the plan would still fly.

I was given another five hours in the airport until this flight left, if all went well. Five hours more, a lot of people would complain but not me - I love airports! Even just sitting in an airport is interesting to me, watching all types of people bustle around, saying goodbye to loved ones, saying hello to loved ones, on their way to another adventure.

I had plenty of time to browse my favourite; H&M and New Yorker shops. Although it did mean I had to cancel plans with some lovey people.

My flight was luckily not cancelled this time, only half an hour delayed! Woo! The flight from Zurich to Stuttgart was the weirdest and quickest flight I have ever been on. It was only 45 minutes, so seemed like the plane just jumped, quickly up then quickly down. It was quite amusing to think I had been in the airport for 7 hours for just a 45 minute flight.

"You can now use all electronics" came over the loud speaker after take-off. I got my Ipod out, after one and a half songs..

"Please switch off all electronics as we are now preparing to land."

As we landed over the city of Stuttgart, it was beautiful with the millions of lights reflecting up into the dark plane cabin. Off the plan and to baggage claim, I got some more news. My bag decided it didn't feel like going to Stuttgart and was now somewhere unknown in Europe.

They told me I should get my bag by the following day and if not they would pay for any expenses needed. They also gave me a bag filled with essentials, although I must say I doubt the nail file was really an essential.

I guess you could say I missed out on some good travellers luck that day. Still a good day and a great experience to have though. It definitely taught me to put a little bit more thought in what I wanted in my hand luggage.
