Health Minister Lawrence Springborg has announced a ban on new commercial solariums from January 1, after research showed their UV radiation process was dangerous.

Tomas Hamilton, who operates Body Techniques massage and beauty salon in Ipswich, said he would continue to run his solarium as long as there was demand.

"When the licences first came in a lot of people stopped operating, but I stick to the rules and I still have a lot of people come in to use it," Mr Hamilton said.

Mr Springborg said using a solarium increased the risk of skin cancer.

People who use a solarium before the age of 35 have a 75% greater risk of melanoma.

"Under new regulations, the possession, supply and use of new commercial solaria will be banned," Mr Springborg said.

He said there was already a decline in commercial solariums.

"Today about 120 solaria are registered to about 80 licensed operators, which is down from 200 operators with 350 units in 2007."

Mr Hamilton said using a solarium in moderation was key to keeping it as safe as possible.

"Too much of anything is bad," he said.

"What many people don't know is that people can only use it once every 48 hours, and we say for a maximum of 10 minutes."

Mr Hamilton said he was concerned the commercial ban would lead to an increase in people using them at home unlicensed.

  • Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) said a total ban was the only way to stop the development of skin cancers linked to solarium use.
  • CCQ called for a total ban on solariums phased in by 2015.
