Silver caps off sailing campaign

AUSTRALIAN'S Olivia Price, Nina Curtis and Lucinda Whitty have capped off an amazing Olympic campaign by the nation's sailors with a silver medal in the women's elliot six metre.

In strong, blustery conditions, the Australians took the gold medal final right down to the wire before finally succumbing to Spain.

The Australian crew lost the first race before hitting right back in the second.

Behind in the third at the halfway mark, the Australians were gaining on the Spanish when disaster struck, a large wave knocking one of the Australians out of the boat.

However, the Price, Curtis and Whitty showed their resilience by winning the fourth race and taking the final to a decider.

But the crew ran afoul with officials and subsequent penalties took the wind out of their sail, ultimately handing Spain the victory.

Finland finished in the bronze medal position.

Price, Curtis and Whitty's success helped Australia top the sailing medal tally with three golds and one silver.
