Hughes to fight sexual assault charges

FORMER Australian TV star Robert Hughes is eager to return to Australia to "prove his innocence" in relation to child sexual assault charges.

The actor, best known for his long-running role in the sitcom Hey Dad!, appeared briefly in Westminster Magistrates Court, News Limited reported.

Mr Hughes's barrister used the extradition appearance to ask for a date to be set for hearing.

The 63-year-old actor stands accused of sexually assaulting five children, aged seven-15, in Australia between 1985 and 1990.

The matter was has been adjourned until September 28, with Mr Hughes remaining free on bail.
