Victim gets a hug from mugger

A DRUNKEN mugger tried to apologise and hug his victim during an unusual mugging incident in the Ipswich CBD.

Police from the Ipswich Child Protection and Investigation Unit were yesterday trying to track down a teenager who twice struck and then robbed a 16-year-old boy on Brisbane St.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Williams said the robber and two associates walked past the victim near the Hotel Metropole about 10.15pm Wednesday. The victim told police he was struck once in the face but kept walking.

The offender followed and demanded money, allegedly striking the 16-year-old again.

The boy handed over $5.40 and a soft drink.

"The offender then apologised to the victim and tried to hug him," he said.

The incident was still under investigation yesterday, however police were confident of laying charges.
