Right time, right place saves life

A DRAMATIC rescue by passers-by saved a young driver's life at the weekend after a wrong turn ended with her trapped in a water-filled ditch near Bauple.

An 18-year-old Brisbane woman, on her way to Dalby for Triple J's free youth concert, One Night Stand, turned left on to Bauple-Woolooga Rd from the Bruce Hwy and rolled her car off a causeway into a flooded ditch.

It was thanks to Glenwood couple Mark and Helen Warwick that the beginner driver was back home safe.

They spotted her upturned car in the deep ditch off the side of the road as they drove by on Saturday afternoon.

When they got to her, she was trapped in the car with her head just above water. Her lips had gone blue and the car door was wedged in by a mud bank.

"If there were passengers we would have lost them," Mrs Warwick said.

"Mark went down and tried his best but couldn't get the door open. At that stage we didn't know if she was even alive. She was just staring at us with her humongous blue eyes but we couldn't get any response from her."

Helen dialled 000 and waved down passing cars.

Mr Warwick cut the seatbelt with the knife on his multipurpose tool, that he religiously keeps strapped to his belt, and started digging at the mud around the door.

Surprisingly, three vehicles were using the road at the time and a Tasmanian couple had a camping shovel handy, which was used to dig the mud away from around the door. A carload from Brisbane also helped lift the car enough to free the driver.

"She is one incredibly lucky girl. She started to get her colour back several minutes after we got her out."
