RICCI Mercer had a fantastic start to her racing career on Tuesday.

The Toowoomba-based apprentice jockey won the Kumbia Cup onboard Ima Joker in just her first race meeting during the 41st Annual Melbourne Cup Day Races at Kumbia Race Club.

The 21-year-old debutant grew up in Perth where she started her apprenticeship in August last year before moving to Toowoomba in January.

Mercer said she was thrilled to win on her debut.

"It was awesome and I thought I rode really well," she said.

"I was relieved I got to the line and nothing passed me.

"I wasn't nervous and I was fairly relaxed and going with the flow.

"I definitely didn't expect to win on my debut."
