All clear after highly contagious bug closes aged care centre

BLUE Care says visitor restrictions have been lifted at its Nowlanvil Aged Care Facility at Flinders View on advice from Queensland Health's Public Health Unit.

The home implemented its infection control procedures about a week ago after three residents fell ill with vomiting and diarrhoea, Blue Care director of services Cathy Thomas said.

"Queensland Health's Public Health Unit was notified and staff members at the facility implemented stringent infection control procedures to protect all residents, staff and visitors," Ms Thomas said.

"Residents with symptoms were closely monitored by staff and local medical practitioners, and received the best care and support.

"The bug is highly contagious, with symptoms lasting three days. Implementing these procedures minimised the spread of infection.

"Any illness is concerning and we have kept our residents, their families and our staff updated.

"While we encourage relatives and friends to delay their visit to the facility until the illness has passed, they are still able to visit if they wish. We ask them to follow our infection control measures.

"On the direction of Queensland Health, all residents were served meals in their room, rather than in the facility's dining rooms to prevent the spread of infection to residents, staff and visitors."

"Apart from this, residents' movements within the facility were unrestricted, with only the three ill residents staying in their rooms as they recovered."

Ms Thomas said visitor restrictions were lifted after Queensland Health advised it was safe to so.

"The health and well-being of our residents is our priority," she said. "The reporting process combined with stringent infection control procedures ensures Blue Care can monitor and quickly action such conditions to protect residents, staff and visitors."

She said vomiting and diarrhoea outbreaks often occurred in the general community and spread quickly, particularly in areas where people lived together such as boarding schools, cruise ships and residential aged care homes.
