Report card shows slight improvement

SCIENTISTS have found the health of both the Logan and Albert catchments is slightly improving despite recording low grading results on this year's Healthy Waterways Report Card.

During the past 12 months, 31 sites along the Logan River and 11 along the Albert were scientifically monitored and tested to receive a grading between an A and F, depending on the quality of the water tested.

Last week, the annual report card found the estuarine levels of the Logan River catchment remained the same with an F grading, where as the Albert moved up from an F rating to a D.

Health, Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson, Councillor Lisa Bradley said she was happy to see the improvements.

"The Albert River has finally moved out of the F grade by increasing its score from 0.207 to 0.3 to achieve a D," she said.

"Unfortunately the Logan River has once again received an F grade.

"However, on the bright side the score has increased from 0.201 to 0.242 - narrowly missing out on achieving the required 0.25 to record a D."

The news was not so good for the catchment's freshwater results, with the Logan River moving from a C- to a D+ and the Albert River scoring a C+, down from a B- the previous year.

Cr Bradley also noted the waterways within the Logan City Council area were not solely located within Logan's boundaries.

"Our waterways also traverse with other local government areas - with approximately only 20 per cent of the Logan and Albert rivers and 50 per cent of the Oxley Creek catchment located within our boundary," she said.
